Glutamate released by activated microglia induces excitoneurotoxicity and may contribute to
neuronal damage in neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer disease, Parkinson
disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and multiple sclerosis. In addition, tumor necrosis
factor-α (TNF-α) secreted from activated microglia may elicit neurodegeneration through
